Video Produces 140% Increase in Sales for Sklz

A common response our sales people get this time of year is, “I’ve already spent my marketing budget, talk to me next year.” But when is it a good time to spend your marketing budget?

These days the coffee can full of leftover money, either isn’t in existence, or it isn’t just hidden, it is behind lock and key only to be spoken of after the economy FULLY recovers. There are two things to think of when spending your marketing budget, or spending money period. The number one thing to consider is Return on Investment (ROI) and number two is ROI. The best case scenario is that you spend money, make money back and then some.

If you’re asking me for my professional opinion, (which I assume rhetorically you are), then I would say invest in yourself. Invest in something that will help you and your business. With television ads how will that TV commercial help your business even if the TV station never ran it, or if nobody was watching (aka fast forwarding with their DVR). Is the money spent on that airtime worth it? As a ten year veteran of the television news industry I can safely say probably not.

Sklz, a California company that manufactures athletic equipment, has never purchased TV commercials, but they do have tons and tons of video. Instead of investing in a hard-to-prove ROI marketing, they invested in themselves. Adding videos that demonstrate how their products are used, and in turn proving why that particular consumer watching should buy it. Guess what? In two months after Sklz launched the new site and video platform, they realized an 8 percent increase in site traffic, and time on site. According to Dick’s Sporting Goods, a reseller of Sklz products, in the third quarter of 2011 Sklz product sales were up 140 percent over the previous year.

Sklz invested in themselves. They invested in showing off their products, and their company. Did they spend money having a production company produce the videos? Yes, but if I told you that by doing this you could see a 140 percent increase in sales you would jump all over it.
